Glycolysis is the process of splitting of sugar is the initial process in the cellular respiration pathway. Glycolysis can be both aerobic or anaerobic and it occurs is in the cytosol of the cell. In the process of glycolysis a six carbon glucose molecules split into various components out of which a two, three carbon component is formed which is called the pyruvate.

Glucose C6H12O6

Breaks into pyruvate molecule in cytoplasm.

Pyruvate later depending on conditions breaks into:

In Presence of Oxygen:

It breaks down into CO2+H2O

Reaction occurs in mitochondria of cell

In absence of Oxygen:

It breaks down into ethanol+CO2

Reaction occurs in yeast

Lack of Oxygen:

It breaks down into Lactic acid

Reaction occurs in our muscle cells
