From the 19th century onwards, the colonial government started imposing restrictions on the pastoral communities. They issued permits which allowed them to move out with their stock and it was difficult to get permits without trouble and harassment. Those found guilty of disobeying the rules were severely punished.
- Feeding the cattle became a problem as quality and quantity of fodder was effected.
- New laws and regulations took away their land and restricted their movement.
- They lost their grazing ground which were converted into reserves, they could neither hunt animals nor graze their herds, lost their customary rights, taxes were imposed on every cattle they grazed.
- The British colonial government also encouraged local peasant communities to expand cultivation therby converting pasture lands into cultivated fields.
- Feeding the cattle became a problem as quality and quantity of fodder was effected.
