Stages in aquatic succession include: Phytoplankton stage - phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria and algae start a community in a body of water. Rooted submerged stage - submerged plants grow under water. Floating stage - rooted floating plants grow on the surface, submerged plants begin dying.
