Developing countries will have a lower solid waste stream since the people living there attempts to collect and reuse materials and goods. However, reuse may require some time, labor, energy and materials.

However, developing countries like India have been using aerobic composting (organic compost as fertilizers), anaerobic composting (biogas as fuel or electricity) or refuse derived fuel (secondary fuel for solid fuel industry) to manage their municipal solid waste.

Developed countries produce more waste per capita because they have higher levels of consumption. There are higher proportions of plastics, metals, and paper in the municipal solid waste stream and there are higher labour costs. As countries continue developing, there is a reduction in biological solid waste and ash.
