ganga starts from Himalayan mountain glacier. from there the water is very pure and clean. then it comes down to uttrakhand where it is polluted in haridwar. then it comes to up. the condition of the river from where is very pathetic till its merging with sea. it flows to industrial area like Kanpur, varanasi, allahbad, etc and gets polluted by discharge from industry. in some of the area the river is considered dead.
