Keep the mixture of salt and water in a petridish and heat them using a Bunsen Burner. After some time, you will find that water has been evaporated and salt is being left in the petridish as a residue. But in this case, you cannot get water as it will be evaporated.

Distillation:-

Keep the mixture of salt and water in a round bottom flask ( when heating is required round bottom flask is used and when heating is not required flat bottom flask is used). Then water will be evaporated and then cooled in the condenser. So you obtain water in the receiver ans salt in the flask.
