first paleobotany refers to study of fossil of plant and their expressions on rocks. so a taxonomist use these fossils and there morphological structure to find out evolutionary relationships between present and past species of plants in addition they also use anatomy to find relationship between them which helps in their classification.
other characters are also used such as biochemical study, phylogeny, ontogeny, cell structure, etc
