I had grown up with a 2-wheeled, large (pneumatic) tyred but small-wheeled “scooter”, and had managed a serious “stack” only the once. I landed face forward, and broke my front teeth. That probably put me off bicycles for a bit.
My recommendation: never fall.
But at 16 or so my older brother moved on from his bicycle, which was originally our father’s, and I gave it a go.
It had a fixed single gear on one side of the back wheel, and a freewheel on the other. Pretty sure I tried the fixie first. My main memory is that it was far too big a frame for me. Everything was dimensionally a stretch. My second memory is of how perilous a fixed wheel can feel when going slowly, and turning.
My recommendation: ride a bike that fits you, and pick a freewheel!
No-one told me that faster felt better on a fixi

Harrowing and painful! I lived on a road with a bit of a slope on it and the girl next door seemed to have it in for me. Somehow I trusted her to teach me how to ride a bike, boy was I smitten in a bad way. Thankfully the neighbour to the other side was a nurse.
After the initial trial and error in learning how to balance and steer I could finally pedal. Once the fear passed I was able to relax it became much easier. Then came the feeling of freedom!
That has stayed with me since I was six years old, and I am thankful because I was able to think of that as a “what not to do” as I introduced my child to riding. At six years of age now herself she is riding her fourth bike and has always enjoyed biking even in winter snow.
