I was 5 years old the first time I rode a bike. Grandpa brought me to the park around the corner from his place with a borrowed bike that was a bit too big for my size. Grandpa didn't believe in trainer wheels. He believed in hard lessons and the value of falling and failing (for there was no other way to grow a backbone if not from learning to stand up again).

So that first time at the park I fell, maybe 10 or 12 times. I got my knees and elbows scratched and my nice shorts stained with my blood. I also learned to ride my bike and have fallen from it very few other times since.

Grandpa gave me two gifts that day: my love for cycling and the knowledge of perseverance's worth.
