Answer:

This theory of Zoltan Dienes is about applying the variability principles in math. Six principles can be applied in order to teach mathematical structures.

In the first stage of freely interaction you experiment with the new situation and randomly try different solution and learn by trial and error.

After this experimenting, in the second stage you can already see how some regularity starts to appear. Some rules can be formulated already.

In stage three, the comparison stage, the new discovered rules can be compared with other ones (from similar problems or games), in order to determine similarities and common points.

Stage four is the stage of representation. A diagram or some representation can be made that represent the essence of the problem.

In stage five, the symbolization stage, the representation can be studied and add some properties in a language. This is the result of what we found in a ‘mathematical sentence’. The discovery can now be developed to describe more properties.

Stage six is the formalization stage: an order is established, rules are defined in order to make the ‘discovery’ as simple as possible, define axioms, theorems, and ways of getting to the final result.
