Describing the connection between crime and unequal access to basic services
Answers
Tenuous and speculative.
The argument for a connection is made primarily by people who want to impose guilt on anyone who doesn’t support the idea that crime is caused by the public.
Here is a guide for you: If a study claiming a connection cites a positive correlation between the two, and that correlation is greater than 85%, and the study itself is not fatally flawed, then you might believe what they say.
But also remember that correlation is not causation. You might find a statistic that claims that 65% of people in California have blue eyes, and therefore living in California causes a greater likelihood of having blue eyes. If so it is probably nonsense.
And also remember that if there were a strong correlation between “unequal access to basic services” then most people with unequal access would commit crimes. And most people WITH equal access would commit fewer crimes. The fact that they do not should support the idea that the relationship is not accurate.
In another case be aware that emotional arguments are not logical arguments and are usually resorted to where logic and research doesn’t support the pre-established position of the claimant.
