Answer:

The Poplar Field' by William Cowper describes the destruction of a field of poplar trees and how its loss allows a speaker to reflect on his death. The poem begins with the speaker describing how the place he loves no longer gives him shade. The trees have been cut down and are now more like seats.

In the poem The Poplar Field, the poet concentrates on the theme of destruction of nature. The poem surrounds a field of poplar trees which grew at the bank of river Ouse. The poem begins with the spontaneous statement that the poplars are felled. Once the poplar trees are cut down, there is neither shade nor the cooling sound of the poplar foliage to be seen. The wind used to play among the leaves, but it no more does. Ouse River no more reflects the trees. It was before 12 years that the poet had seen the trees for the first time. Today, he is sitting on top of the trees lying on the grass, the very trees which had provided him shade twelve years before. The blackbirds which used to come here has gone to another field of Hazel trees. No one can hear the sweet song of those birds any more in the poplar field.

The poet then relates his own life with the poplar trees. His lifetime is passing by fast. Before long, he will have to be just what the poplar trees are now. He will soon lie in his grave, with grass growing on his chest and a stone erect at his head. All this will happen before another grove of poplar trees replace the currently felled trees. The mere image causes the poet to contemplate upon the brevity of the human happiness. The life of the man may look like a dream, everlasting. But his enjoyments does not even last as long as he lives. The poem relates the destruction of nature to the brevity of life in an efficient way.
