Black Midas, written by Guyanese author Jan Carew, portrays the class-conflict and greed in Guyana during the postcolonial period.
Aron Smart the protagonist, loses his parents in early life and is brought up by his grandparents, living in a farm. He gradually realises that education is important if one is to progress in life. But his school life is abruptly cut short by tragic events making him bitter but more determined to go up the ladder in society.
He quickly becomes rich, only to be cheated of his wealth. He tries to claw back to his old self but is caught in an accident which maims him. It leaves him yearning to go back to a simple life in farm.
