Hydra: A Multicellular Animal
Hydra is a fresh water multicellular animal. It belongs to the phylum called coelenterata. It remains attached to the substrate or objects. It is a carnivorous animal that feeds on water fleas, insects, larvae, etc.
The body of a hydra is contractile, elongated and cylindrical closed tube - like structure. The body is made of two layers. The outer layer is ectoderm and the inner layer is endoderm and both the layers are attached with a non - living thing called mesogloea. The body is closed at one end while the another end is open out by a small pore. The closed end or proximal end is called a foot or basal disc. It contains a gland that secretes sticky substances which help the hydra to attach on the substratum. It also help in its movement. The distal end of the body has a hypostome or mouth. The mouth is only the single opening of a hydra. This opening acts for both swallowing food and ejection of wastes of the body.
The mouth is encircled by 6 to 10 slender, contractile, hollow tentacles. The tentacles bear stinging cells or nematocysts. Tentacles with stinging cells help to paralyse and catch the prey. Tentacles also help in locomotion.
An adult hydra develops lateral outgrowth called a bud. Later, the bud separates from the patent hydra and behaves as a new hydra. This is one of the methods of asexual reproduction.
Some hydra are hermaphrodite or bisexual as they bear both male and female sex organs on the same body. The male sex organ is the testis and the female sex organ is the ovary. These organs take part in sexual reproduction.

HYDRA
Hydra is a freshwater organism which belongs to the Kingdom Animalia . The phylum of the hydra is Cnidaria . The organism hydra is radially symmetrical . Radially symmetrical means that the organism has similar sides if they are cut in several planes . Hydra belongs to the class Hydrozoa .The creature contains several structures called tentacles .The Hydra obtains its nutrition through stinging cells called cnidocysts . The cnidocysts have nematocysts .
Each tentacles have cnidocysts which have nematocysts . The organism is diploblastic . Di means two . Diploblastic refers to the organisms having two body layers : ectoderm and endoderm . Hydra shows asexual reproduction by budding . Budding is a form of asexual reproduction which proceeds by the formation of buds . The process is rapid under favourable conditions . However some hydras show sexual reproduction which involves the formation of gametes .
The Hydra is an invertebrate as it does not have any vertebra . The Hydra has a basal disc at its base .It has a cylindrical structure . The hydra shows locomotion by somersaulting . The mouth of the Hydra serves as an organ for excretion of undigested food .
