Pictures. Those little things that help people keep their memories alive. The things that help us to remember the past, and the people that existed in our lives in the past, and the present. Everybody knows that “A picture is worth a thousand words”, but a picture is worth much more than that, a picture is worth a thousand memories, too. Memories that will be more important to you when you wish you could go back and relive that day. Pictures bring back memories, of the day it was taken, the people there, and the events that occurred the day someone stood behind some type of camera, pressed the shutter button, and took a picture of you. I have pictures, as most people do, mostly family pictures, hundreds of pictures of my family and me. I could look at one of those pictures and tell you what was happening when it was taken, where I was, who I was with, and why. I have one picture, in particular, that I have seen numerous times, of my cousins, grandma, sister, and me on the day we were leaving my grandma’s house to come back home, bringing my grandma and two cousins with me. In that picture, mine and my sister’s hair was in two French braids because my aunt was so good at braiding hair. That picture brings back memories, that particular trip, the clothes I was wearing in the picture, and the approximate year it was taken. I have pictures that have been taken with every member of my family, except my grandpa. He’s the only one, and now he’s gone, I’ll never get a picture with him. Nothing to trigger a flow of memories when my memory itself begins to fade away. I won’t be able to look back on a picture and say “Here I am with my grandpa in Iowa at grandma’s table, when he came upstairs every morning for his daily cup of coffee and to read the newspaper and check to see if he by any chance had the winning lottery ticket.” This is something I regret. I wish I had taken pictures more often. When I look back through my photo album, I look at each picture, and I remember that day. I believe that pictures are worth a thousand words, but not just that, worth a thousand memories. Pictures are worth a thousand memories because one glance at a picture can bring back stories that you had otherwise forgotten about.
