Crassulacean acid metabolism or CAM is the process where in the desert plants take up carbon dioxide at night and prepare an intermediate which is acted upon by the energy absorbed by the chlorophyll during the day.

Desserts are very hot and receive very less amount of rainfall. Plants in general take CO2 in the day time, during this process they lose water to reduce this water loss few desert plants take CO2 during night and close their stomata in the day time.
