Answer:

The reason for formation of desert on the two sides of Andes is quite complex and interesting.I will try to keep it simple.. Atacama desert lies along the western coast while Patagonian Desert is on the eastern side

1)Case of Patagonian Desert -

This desert formation is easy to understand as it lies completely in the temperate region and hence is under the effect of westerlies.. Now , westerlies coming from Pacific ocean towards Atlantic find a barrier in form of Andes..This Patagonia region unfortunately lies in the rain shadow area ,and hence denied of westerly rainfall . To add to its aridity, it's eastern coast gets regularly cooled by the cold Falkland current..And any chance of a low pressure creation along eastern coast gets vanished..So despite being only 400 km from coast, it fails to receive moisture from either side..

2) Case of Atacama -

“The two sided rainshadowed area”..…On its western side , lies the Chilean coast range which blocks the winds from Pacific Ocean…On the eastern side is the great Andes , which prevents the winds from the Amazonian region to percolate through it…This two sided raibshadowing phenomena results in blockage of moisture from both direction ,and hence in absence of advection of sufficient moisture, this becomes the driest place of earth…
