Launch GIMP and create a new file by clicking on "File" and "New." Choose from the Template drop-down box "US-Letter (300ppi)" to make a regular, letter-sized file with the high-quality resolution of 300 pixels per inch. Select "Landscape" for a horizontal

Click on "Select" and "All." Click again on "Select" and this time click on "Border." Input 1 inch as the size and select "OK." Select the "Bucket Fill Tool," choosing a Fill Type of "Pattern" and design of "Marble #1." (You can choose another design if you prefer.) Click your cursor within the border and the border will be filled with the marble design. Remove the selection dotted lines by clicking on "Select" and "None."

Select the "Text Tool" and click your cursor within the workbook. Type "Certificate of Achievement," or whatever else you may be giving the certificate for, into the text editor and choose an elegant font along with a size that suits your preferences. Click on the "Move Tool" and then double-click and drag your text to the top-center of the page. Locate the corresponding text layer in the Layers Dialog and right-click on the thumbnail. Select "Layer to Image Size" to prepare the text for the next effect.

Click on "Filters," "Alpha to Logo" and "Glossy." Adjust the settings, if desired, and click "OK." This will transform your otherwise ordinary text into a glossy and polished word art.

Click back on the Text Tool to insert additional text boxes such as "Presented to" and "Date Awarded." If you want to add the glossy effect to any other text, simply select "Layer to Image Size" and repeat the Glossy Filter.

Save your glossy certificate workbook by clicking on "File" and "Save as." Use the GIMP-native extension ".xcf" to maintain the file.
