In nature sulphur reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide , oxygen and nitrogen to form sulphur dioxide, sulphur oxide and suplhur nitride which decreases the ph of rain water in less than 5.5 which causes acid rain.

This acid rain causes corrode the monuments and also makes the river water acidic.
