ACTIVITY TO SHOW INTER-RELATION BETWEEN FORCE, AREA AND PRESSURE !

Material required:

  • Balloon
  • Pumper
  • Pins
  • Blunt objects

Experiment:

  • Use the pumper and inflate two balloons.

  • Put force on the first balloon using the pin. And use the blunt object to put force on the second balloon.

Observation:

  • The pin punctures the balloon, but the blunt object does not.

Inference:

  • Since the pin had a much smaller area of contact, the pressure exerted on the balloon was much higher , which caused the balloon to get punctured and deflated.

  • But the blunt object had a higher area, leading to lesser pressure and the balloon did not get punctured.

Accompanying Equations:

 \boxed{ \sf \: pressure =  \dfrac{force}{area} }

Hope It Helps.
