It is true that despite the teachings and preachings for the need of universal brotherhood, there still exists a lot of segregation and discrimination in the society.
Discrimination and segregation have been in the society for many centuries and it is difficult to change the minds of the people and their practices completely. Although one can attribute it the mindset of individuals, the practices that are prevalent in the society make it hard to wipe out discrimination.
Caste discrimination has been the most blatant kind of segregation in our society. Although there are many efforts by organizations to stop this, it is nowhere showing any positive effect. Also, there are reservation systems in the country for the BC's, SCs and ST's. So, the people seem to put themselves in the caste system for the additional opportunities.
Also, one's individual cultural, religious beliefs make it easy for discriminating each other, especially by politicizing the religions and cultures.
