As a five year old , Bismillah khan would regularly go to nearby Biharji temple to sing the Bhojpuri chaita at the end of which he would earn a big laddu weighing 1.25 kg, a prize given by a local maharaja. Later he accompanied his uncle to Allahabad music conference. Bismillah khan played shehnai on radio and soon became an often heard Shenai player on radio. His big break came out in 1938.
