Both quality and intensity of light influence photosynthesis. Pertaining to light intensity, it has a direct relationship with the rate of photosynthesis. As the intensity of light increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases. However, this direct relationship is not seen at higher light intensities. At higher light intensities, the rate of photosynthesis decreases. When the intensity of light falling on leaf increases beyond a point, chlorophyll is destroyed. This phenomena occurs in the presence of O2 and is called photo-oxidation.

Caternoids plays a protective role by absorbing the excess light and diverging it away from chlorophyll. The caternoids also act as antioxidants, and help detoxify the bad effect of activated O2 species on chlorophyll molecules.

Hope it helps☑
