Asynapsis is the complete failure ofhomologous chromosomes to pair or synapse during the first meiotic division, whereas, desynapsis is a condition where homologous chromosomes pair or synapse normally at the beginning of prophase, but later fail to maintain this association in the subsequent stages of meiosis and ..

• Prophase

Desynapsis occurs when the homologous chromosomes synapse in the prophase but in later stages they fail to maintain the synapse . Thus, this eventually  leads to premature segregation . Desynapsis was first found in maize . This plays a vital role in the formation of poly-ploids* .

*Polyploidy is the state of a cell or organism having more than two paired (homologous) sets of chromosomes.
