Euglena is a protozoan which is single-celled flagellate. It belongs to the domain Eukaryota, class Euglenoidea, order Euglenales, and family Euglenaceae. They are present in both freshwater and saltwater. They are autotrophs as well as heterotrophs. they have photosynthesizing chlorophyll a and b which helps them to produce their own food in the presence of sunlight but in case of nonavailability of sunlight they can obtain their food heterotrophically i.e. from organic substances too. They have flagella attached to their basal-bodies which helps them to swim. It also posses a red eyespot made up of carotenoid pigment. It does not have a cell wall but has a pellicle made up of proteins. They show the amoeboid movement. in adverse conditions, they tend to form cysts to remain dormant.
