One of the short essays that stuck in my mind was Max Beerbohm’s “The Golden Drugget.” He was born in England and educated at Oxford, but spent his later life in a hilly coastal town in Italy.

While living there he became fascinated by a ray of light falling on the road from the window of an inn, which he called The Golden Drugget. It became a source of comfort, security and hope for him. It was something that he ignored most of the time, but on a cold, windy and moonless night, it guided him to safety and to the warmth of an abode.
