• Gastrointestinal tract Hormones •

There are several endocrine cells present in different parts of gastrointestinal tract which secrets four types of hormones.

These hormones are secreted by Gastrointestinal tract cells that's why they are named as Gastrointestinal tract Hormones.

The hormones secreted by Gastrointestinal tract cells are -

1. Gastrin - It is secreted by Stomach, Duodenum and Pancreas also. It is peptide in nature. It stimulates the secretion of Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and Pepsinogen.

It's very highly level causes a syndrome known as Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) syndrome. It causes Ulcer and diarrhoea also.

2. Secretin - It is secreted by Duodenum. It stimulates Pancreas to secret water and bicarbonate ion. It also helps to maintain the pH level in Duodenum by stimulating above secretions. Due to stimulation of water secretion it is also responsible for osmoregulation.

It's deficiency may result in Peptic ulcer.

3. Cholecystokinin (CCK) - It is also secreted by Duodenum. It stimulates gall bladder and pancreas to secret their secretion.

It's deficiency rarely found in an autoimmune disease called as Polyglandular Syndrome.

4. Gastric Inhibitory Peptide (GIP) - As the name itself suggest it inhibits Gastric secretion. It also stimulates the secretion of Pancreas. It is secreted by the wall of Duodenum and Jejunum.

It's deficiency may cause high accumulation of fat which leads to obesity.

Answer:

GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) HORMONES are chemical messengers that regulate

intestinal and pancreatic function,

including regulation of secretion,

motility, absorption, digestion, and cell proliferation.

These hormones are secreted by endocrine cells, which are widely distributed throughout the GI mucosa and pancreas.
