Mitochondria are double-membrane bound cell organelle of Eukaryotic cells concerned with aerobic respiration.

Kolliker discovered Mitochondria and the name was given by Banda

Mitochondria are found in eukaryotic cells but not in prokaryotic cells. Among eukaryotic cells they are absent in matured mammalian RBC.

Structure- Generally mitochondria are rod-shaped, elliptical or orbicular. They are bounded by two membranes- an outer and an inner. The outer membrane is smooth and inner membrane is with many figures like infoldings called mitochondrial christae. Over the mitochondrial christae there are many tennis racket like body called F1 particle or Farnandez moron particle or oxygome. In between the outer membrane and the inner membrane there isa space called outer chamber which remains filled with a with a watery fluid. Bounded by the inner membrane is the inner chamber which is filled with a proteineous matrix which contains enzymes, vitamins, minerals,DNA,RNA,rhibosomes, etc.

Function-

1)Mitochondria with the help of its enzymes can generate ATP(energy currency) and hence it is considered as powerhouse of the cell.

2) It takes part in lipid oxydation

3)A part of urea cycle takes place in mitochondria.

ENERGY CURRENCY- ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate) is called energy currency of the cell.

As we can have a desired thing or can have a work done in lieu of currency notes a cell can manufacture something or can have a work done by supplying energy from ATP. This is why, its called energy currency.

Mitochondria- a strange cell organ:-

Unlike other organelles except plastids mitochondria contains RNA andrhibosomes. DNA is foundin the chromosomes of Eukaryotic cell and in the cytoplasm of Prokaryotic cell. Rhibosome is a cell organelle which is found in the cytoplasm. The presence of DNA and RNA enable the mitochondria to synthesis proteins and thus it becomes semi-autonomous.
