If the organic compounds gets differentiated due to heating a greenish yellow gas is evolved which has a pungent odour . This gas is chlorine.

There are many more reactions for the identification of chlorine gas like reactions with potassium or sodium where the method of double displacement take place and potassium chloride or sodium chloride is formed
