Detergent are better cleaning agents than soaps because they can be used even with hardwater.the charged ends of detergents do not form insoluble precipitate with calcium and magnesium ions in hard water.when soap is used for washing clothes with hardwater,it reacts with calcium and magnesium ions of hard water to form an insoluble precipitate called scum. Scum sticks to the cloth to be washed and it makes the cleaning of clothes difficult.
