Steps to determine the acid contents in sour fruits.

Aim:

  • To determine the acid content of given sour fruits.

Materials required:

  • Fruit samples of lemon,tamarind ,tomato ,orange,sweet lemon,etc.
  • pH paper.
  • Knife

Principle:

  • The pH of any substance can be determined by the pH paper. As the given fruits are sour, they may be acidic and thus has pH below 7.

Procedure:

  1. Small piece of sample is taken from sour fruits such as lemon,tamarind,tomato, orange, sweet lemon, etc are taken.
  2. The universal indicator of pH paper is taken.
  3. Each fruit is tested with pH paper and the values corresponding to the color is recorded.
  4. In this way, the determination of acid content is performed and the type of acid can be identified.
  5. Accordingly, the acid content of the given fruits are as follows:
  • lemon - Citric acid
  • tamarind - Tartaric acid
  • tomato - Citric acid
  • orange - Citric acid
  • sweet lemon - Citric acid
