Given:

Refractive index of water = \sqrt{2}

Refractive index of air = 1

Actual depth of the pool = 30 cm

To find:

Apparent depth of the pool.

Solution:

Since, the given phenomenon is due to refraction of the light.

Formula to get the apparent depth of the object,

\frac{\text{Apparent depth of the object}}{\text{Actual depth of the object}}=\frac{\mu_{air}}{\mu_{water}}

\frac{d}{30}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}

d = \frac{30}{\sqrt{2}} cm

d = 15\sqrt{2} ≈ 21.21 cm

Therefore, apparent depth of the pool will be 21.21 cm.
