Given:

Width of the rectangular section = 100mm

Depth of the rectangular section = 200mm

To find:

Moment of inertia about an axis passing through the centroid parallel to the base.

Radius of gyration

Moment of inertia about its base.

Solution:

Given

the width of rectangle, b = 100mm

The depth of rectangle, h = 200 mm

Moment of inertia about an axis passing through the centroid parallel to the width will be given by

MI1 = \frac{bh^3}{12}

MI1 = 66.66 x 10^6 mm^4

The radius of gyration will be equal to = \frac{h}{\sqrt{12} }

r = 57.8 mm

Now

The moment of inertia about the base will be

MI2 = \frac{bh^3}{3}

MI2 = 266.66 x 10^6 mm^4

The moment of inertia about an axis passing through the centroid parallel to the base will be 66.66 x 10^6 mm^4.

The radius of gyration will be 57.8 mm

The moment of inertia about its base will be 266.66 x 10^6 mm^4
