Determine the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation 2x

2 + 5√3x + 16 = 0.

Solution:

The given quadratic equation is 2x

2 + 5√3x + 16 = 0

Comparing the given quadratic equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get,

 a = 2, b = 5√3, c = 16

  = b

2 – 4ac

= (5√3)

2 – 4(2)(16)

= 75 – 128

  = – 53

  < 0

 The roots of the quadratic equation are not real

2) By filling the following boxes find the quadratic equation whose roots are 1 – 3√5 and 1 + 3√5
