5y²-2y-2=0

here a = 5 ,b = -2 c = -2

so, D = b²-4ac

\implies (-2)²-4×5×(-2)

\implies 4-(-40)

\implies 4+40

\implies 44

Here D > 0

hece, this equation has real and distinct roots.

By quadratic formula

\alpha = b+√D/2a

\alpha = -2+√44/10....ans......

and,

\beta = -2-√44/10
