SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

Determine whether the given values can serve as the values of a probability distribution of the random variable X that can take only the values of 1,2,3.

P(1) = 0.08, P(2) = 0.12, P(3) = 1.03

EVALUATION

Here it is given that the variable X that can take only the values of 1,2,3.

P(1) = 0.08, P(2) = 0.12, P(3) = 1.03

Now the given values can serve as the values of a probability distribution of the random variable X if

P(1) + P(2) + P(3) = 1

Now

P(1) + P(2) + P(3)

= 0.08 + 0.12 + 1.03

= 1.23 ≠ 1

Also it can be noticed that P(3) = 1.03 > 1

Both of above are impossible

So the given values can not serve as the values of a probability distribution of the random variable X
