➡Refractive Index is defined as the relative speed at which light moves through a material with respect to its speed in vacuum. As both the values belong to same quantity (speed), units gets nullified. So Refractive Index is dimensionless quantity. Dimensional Formula of Refractive Index= M0L0T0.

Answer:

The ratio between the speed of light in medium to speed in a vacuum is the refractive index.

Formula:-

n=c/v

Where,

n is the refractive index

c is the velocity of light in a vacuum ( 3 × 10^8 m/s)

v is the velocity of light in a substance

It's a ratio so there would be no SI or CGS unit.

v is the velocity of light in that particular medium. c is the velocity of the light in vacuum.As both the values belong to same quantity (speed), units gets nullified. So Refractive Index is dimensionless quantity.

Dimensional Formula of Refractive Index= M^0L^0T^0.
