The strategy of using picture cards and flashcards for learning and teaching a language or subject is called as the picture word inductive model (PWIM).
Teachers use this method by using pictures of familiar objects and actions to elicit words from children's listening and speaking vocabularies, in classrooms, groups etc. This method also helps the children to improve their ability to think.
1. A picture should be selected first and the children should be asked to identify the object in the picture.
2. The parts can be identified and the teacher can spell the word and pronounce it. Ask the children to repeat it.
3. Ask the children to add new add words in relation to the picture. Eg. – if the picture is that of an apple, the teacher teaches as “A for Apple”. The students can make new related words like ‘Red Apple’, ‘Apple fruit’ etc.
Similar methods can be used to build sentences for higher classes and for learning a new language.
