We had planned for every eventuality on our quest to conquer Mt. Everest. The team was comprised of 20 members. I knew almost everyone in the team except for the porters. We had checked and re-checked our gear. Jeff who was our team leader was the most experienced among us. He had explained the pitfalls we might face during the climb. Everyone was nervous and people engaged in small talk. Some sat quietly in contemplation while others read books or listened to music from their iPods.
We had planned to climb the mountain on Friday. We woke up at the crack of dawn and headed out. The trip was very enjoyable and the team was very excited. Conquering the tallest mountain in the world was on everyone's mind.People often talk about the thrill of standing on top of the tallest mountain in the world. For me the climb was to prove to myself that I can achieve anything that I set my mind on.We started the climb at 6.30 p.m. We climbed steadily for three hours.
Jeff suggested a break and we were all relieved. He explained that we needed to get to the nearest camp before three o'clock. It was very getting very chilly and I was trembling. We continued to climb, and we received bad news over the radio. The weather was getting worse by the minute and we had not reached the camp. Everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts. It started raining suddenly and we lost visibility due to the dense fog that surrounded us suddenly. People started panicking and Jeff tried to keep the team calm.
The rain kept pounding on us mercilessly. The rain made the climb very arduous. We kept forging forward. One of the team members had collapsed and was lying on the dirt. Jeff swung into action and administered first aid on him. The porter had slipped and hurt his foot. The rain was becoming unbearable. Jeff made the call to abandon the climb. He radioed the Emergency and Rescue services. The rescue helicopters were en route and the expected time of arrival was five minutes. We started praying. We were relived to hear that help was on the way. The helicopters arrived and thus we were saved in the nick of time
