In a dense forest in Northern India lived a family of parrots. They had built their nest in the bark of an old sal tree. There were six of them living in the same nest. They quarreled, chattered, sang and played the whole day. In the evening all nestled in and shared the solemnity of the night.
In the same tree lived another family of birds-the hornbills. They too lived in peace and harmony.
The woodpeckers were occasional but welcome visitors. They came to drill holes in the trees and help make new homes for the resident birds.
The finches came occasionally with their colourful nestlings.
Close by lived the sophisticated weaver birds. They wove beautiful nests and decorated them with dry flowers. At night they had fire flies for bed lamps that glowed their aesthetic huts.
In this beautiful colony of birds guarded the wise owls to stand vigil at night.
One night the owls started screeching alarmingly. All the resident bird families were in deep slumber. The screeching finally awakened them but it was too late. Some bird trappers had come and they hunted down all the sleeping birds.
Next day, morning greeted the birds behind iron bars. All were trapped and caged. They were taken to a big market to be sold. Their freedom and happiness alas, were all lost!
As the poor birds awaited their fates a very peaceful looking mendicant with rosary beads came that way. Along with him came some of his disciples who happened to be rich worldly men.
The mendicant ordered them to buy all the birds. Surprised but obliging they did as told. The mendicant then told them to carry the cages and follow him.
He walked into the forest and when deep inside told his followers to open the cages. They were astonished by his order. He smiled and said that those born free live life best when free. Soon the birds flew happily out of their cages and they were all free.
