                                      Over-confidence Never Pays

I am a very confident person. While my parents are very happy about the fact, they also caution me not to be too confident. I never paid heed to their advice and hence I had to learn it the hard way.

A few days back I was asked by my teacher to take part in an essay-writing competition in another school. I was very proud that my teacher had asked me because I have good writing skills. I also got a lot of prizes earlier and I was very proud of myself.

The next day my teacher arranged for a small session for the participants to discuss the topics but thinking that I could do well on my own, I ignored his request. I didn't even pay attention to the topics that were listed for the competition. On the day of my competition, I went along with other participants and sat down to write the essay. When I saw the topics, I realized that none of them were topics of my knowledge. I tried to select something but I knew that I didn't have enough information to write.

The competition taught me that no matter how confident you are, you should always be prepared for it. I knew at that moment, I should have been careful right from the beginning.

I should have been careful right from the beginning

Life is a wonderful gift of God meant to be lived very cautiously. At times untoward incidents happen so haphazardly so unpredictably out of the blue that you are left shocked. One such sad incident happened to me a few years ago on the DIwali eve whose memories are indelibly etched on my mind.

I along with my mother was on my way to my friend’s house in the countryside to give him the festival sweets. It was twilight. The sun had just set beyond the horizon. There is a hairpin bend just a mile before his house that I always enjoyed during the ride. As I turned my bike along the hairpin turn, a pup came exactly in front of my bike…it happened so suddenly…my bike ran over the pup…it was in excruciating pain…it whined, writhed and shrieked…I stopped…my mother behind me…I thought of rushing it to a vet in the city. But it breathed its last in front of my eyes.

Now, I pay extra care to animals, especially pups on the road. But I should have been careful right from the beginning.
