                       Sustaining Life by Eliminating Plastic

We are aware of the fact that plastic does not break down naturally and gets deposited in natural systems, including rivers and oceans creating an immense amount of pollution. The production, use, and disposal of plastics also create significant greenhouse gases throughout the different stages of the plastic value chain, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer. So, the primary goal is to stop the huge production of plastics in the various domains of the industry and to produce a pollution-free alternative for the same.

The elimination of plastic products can be achieved by implementing various ideas.

--> Reusing: We need to prioritize safe reusable products which should be cost-effective at the same time.

--> Turning 'single-use' to 'multi-use': As we know, suddenly we cannot eliminate plastics which have been an integral part of our lives, so we should try and make the one-time use products durable enough so that they last more.

--> Help from Government: To reach out to the masses and make them aware of the hazards posed to human life by plastics and somehow make them employable in the production of alternatives on a large scale.

If we can succeed, even to some extent in curbing the use of plastics in daily-to-daily life, we can ensure many benefits. Some of them are:

--> Healthy life: Plastics are made of toxic chemicals such as phthalates and BPA which are present in food packaging which we unknowingly consume. Preventing this will result in a better and healthy lifestyle.

--> Preservation of marine life: Marine species are continuously being affected by plastic deposition. The fishes ingest or get caught in between the plastics which leads to their deaths. It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than in fish.

--> Land and ground-water pollution: The huge amounts of waste plastics are buried in landfills under the earth. The harmful chemical constituents of plastic make the land unfit for irrigation and harm the soil. Even the chemicals seep down and reach the ground-water levels, leading to depletion of drinking water as well.

It is indeed a huge mission where we need the collaboration of the government along-with active participation from the common people. We can say that we are successful in our task when we observe a difference in the surroundings with better water, food, and air to breathe. We can be successful once we make it a point to eliminate plastic for our good and the generations to come.
