Automatic teller machines (ATM) are electronic payment systems that have developed due to the rapid development of telecommunications and information technology (IT) networks. An ATM increases existing business, reduces risk, lowers costs and provides additional revenue streams. ATMs are placed not only near or inside the premises of banks, but also in locations such as shopping centers/malls, airports, grocery stores, petrol/gas stations, restaurants, or any place with high visibility ratio. These represent two types of ATM installations: on and off premises. In Egypt the location of ATM is mainly on premises, for more security and transaction control. Yet from the customer viewpoint on premises ATMs are not necessarily the optimum location. A number of criteria determine the location selection. A number of criteria for the ATM location from the perspective of bankers and customers in Egypt are identified. Based on these criteria, an analytical model for locating ATMs in Egypt is developed. The model considers both customers' and bankers' interests; the objective is to determine the optimum number of ATMs and their locations in order to cover customers' demand within a given geographical area.
