We often represent a set of nos.(or elements) in the form of a rectangular array of rows and columns for keeping various records.Some illustrations are:
If Arun secures 70 marks in eng,we may express this as [70] or (70) which means that the no. inside[ ] or( ) is the marks obtained by Arum in eng.
Likewise if he secue 70 marks in eng,85 in maths and 80 in statics we may express this as:[70 85 80].
Definition---A matrix is a rectangular  array of nos. enclosed by a pair of brackets
[ ] or ( ) subject to certain rules of operation.A set of mn no.a₁₁,a₁₂,.....,amn arranged in a rectangular array of m  rows and n columns like
