There were 18 pears.

Let P be pear and A be avocado

P : A = 3 : 7

3A = 7P

P : (A+84) = 3 : 13

3(A+84) = 13P

3A + 252 = 13P

7P + 252 = 13P

(13 – 7)P = 252

14P = 252

⇒ P = 252/14

P = 18

3A = 7 × 18

A = 42

Thus, there were 18 pears.
