The aim of this experiment is to study the effect of the temperature and concentration variation on the reaction rate between the hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate.
Explanation:
Sulphur has the property of the colloidal solution resulting in making the translucent system. This is used for studying the sulphur’s precipitation rate.
The concentration effect on the reaction rate:
- Fill the trough with half of water. Burette should be filled with 1.0 M HCl solution. In the centre of the outer surface, make a mark X in a 100 mL beaker.
- In it, fill 50mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate. Leave the beaker to stand for few minutes. This will help in attaining the bath's temperature.
- Then, add 1.0 mL of 1.0 M HCl solution using burette. Record the time for marking 'X' at the beaker's bottom. The experiment can be repeated by adding 16 mL, 8 mL, 4 mL, and 2 mL of 1.0 M HCl solution to sodium thiosulphate solution.
- The time required for disappearance of mark is recorded.
The temperature effect on the reaction rate:
- In a 100 mL beaker, take 50 mL of 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution. In the centre of the outer surface make a mark X in a 100 mL beaker.
- A thermostat should be maintained in a beaker at 30°C. Add 5 mL of 1.0 M hydrochloric acid. After the addition of half of the amount, start the stopwatch.
- Record the timing and repeat the experiment using fresh sodium thiosulphate solution at 50°C, 60°C, 40°C and 70°C. record the disappearance time using the mark ‘X’.
- Record the observation and plot the graphs. This helps to determine the HCl concentration and the time taken for the mark to become unseen.
