Dewani Adalat refers to a Civil Court. The British had established Sudder Dewani Adalats to hear civil disputes in matters in the districts under their control. After independence, these were kept as District Civil Courts. Faujdari Adalats are in the magistrates Courts, where criminal cases are heard at the first instance. A Magistrate is empowered to pass seritences of up to 7 years in criminal cases. For criminal cases which require longer sentences, the cases are committed to the Sessions Courts. Sessions Courts can pass any sentence, including the death penalty, but death penalty sentences. Imt be confirilled by the High Court before being executed.
