• Lotus is one of two extant species of aquatic plants of the Nelumbonaceae family. Sometimes colloquially called  water lily, but more generally it refers to a member of the water lily family.
• The lotus plants are adapted to grow in slow-flowing rivers and delta floodplains. Lotus stands drop hundreds of thousands of seeds  to the bottom of the pond each year. Some germinate quickly and most are eaten by wildlife, but when the pond dries with silt, the remaining seeds can be dormant for extended periods of time. During flood conditions, sediments containing these seeds are crushed, dormant seeds hydrate and establish new lotus colonies.
• It is a sacred flower, occupying a unique place in ancient Indian art and mythology, has always been an auspicious symbol of Indian culture.
