Diagonal AC of a rectangle ABCD is produced to the point E such that AC : CE = 2 :1, AB = 16 cm and BC = 12 cm. Find the length of DE.

AC : CE = 2x : x

CE = AC / 2

DC= 16 cm ( as opposite sides of rectangle are =)

diagonal = under root l^2 + b^2

AC = under root 12^2 + 16^2

AC = under root 144+ 256

AC = under root 400

AC = 20 cm

Therefore CE will be half of AC = 10 cm

DE = under root DC^2 + CE ^2

DE = under root 16^2 + 10^2

DE = under root 256 + 100

DE= 356 = 2 root 89
