Plastids are the site of manufacture and storage of important chemical compounds used by the cell. They often contain pigments used in photosynthesis, and the types of pigments present can change or determine the cell's color.

Chloroplast of green plants and algae are known to involve in complex process where in synthesis of food molecules takes place upon fixing atmospheric carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen molecule into the fresh air.

Chloroplasts are known to contain 2 types of photo systems referred as PS1 and PS2 which are capable of transferring high energy electrons generated at photo centers through sequential electron carriers and result in formation of energy molecule referred as ATP.
